Being a Conqueror: What It Truly Means

Minimal laurel wreath behind a simple title Being a Conquerer Romans 8

A conqueror, by definition, has fought a battle and emerged victorious.

We sing about Romans 8:37. We hang it on our walls. But do we receive that verse in its true context?

“We are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37, NASB)

Placing Romans 8:37 in Context

Let’s place that verse where Paul meant it. Romans 8:35–39 (NASB):

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Just as it is written, ‘For Thy sake we are being put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’
But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Hallelujah!

Conquering Means a Battle Was Faced

Many homes display this verse stitched into wall hangings or inked into tattoos. But unless you know the full passage, its strength can be lost.

To be a conqueror means you conquered something. It implies a struggle, a storm, or a battle you endured and survived. That is exactly Paul’s point.

Paul’s Testimony of Victory

Paul wrote this letter to the Roman church. He was not speaking theory; he was testifying from experience. The former persecutor of Christians now endured persecution himself. He was stoned. He was beaten. He was imprisoned. He survived shipwrecks.

Paul had earned the right to declare with conviction: “In all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.”

Your Challenge Today

Write down at least ten times in your life when you came through as a conqueror through Jesus. These can be as simple as times you kept your tongue when you were tempted to lash out.

Keep that list close. Store it in your journal or on your computer. When storms come again, bring it out. Speak it aloud. Remember that Jesus has never failed you.

Then, with Paul, you can declare:

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate me from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
