When Careless Comfort Hurts More Than It Helps
Understanding the Weight of Careless Words
A thought crossed my mind this week as I scrolled through Facebook. I read responses to posts from hurting Christians. Some were facing serious health crises. Others were grieving the loss of a loved one.
Most replies were kind and sympathetic. Yet a few stood out for the wrong reasons. Some offered strident advice to “buck up, grab your faith by the bootstraps, and move on.”
Even worse, some people clicked a simple “like” on a heartbreaking post. A sister had just shared the sudden and tragic loss of her beloved brother. Wouldn’t a simple “I’m so sorry for your loss” have been better?
The Tenderness of a Wounded Heart
When someone grieves, their heart is tender. Losing a loved one or suddenly losing health feels like an open wound.
A strong person can shrug off careless remarks in normal times. But in crisis, even a small, careless word feels like salt in that wound.
How Jesus Responded to the Hurting
So, what did Jesus do when people came to Him brokenhearted and desperate?
He never lectured the sick on their lack of faith. He never told families to push past grief before raising their dead.
Instead, He encouraged those who came for healing. He wept with those who wept.
Jesus revealed the Father’s love in ways people could feel. He healed the blind. He cleansed lepers. He helped the lame walk. He forgave sinners. He freed the tormented.
And to the weary and hopeless, He offered grace. He brought hope.
Until next time,
