When Fear Drives, Faith Gets Stuck
In the spiritual lives of many Christians, two quiet enemies often slip in unnoticed: FOMO and FOBI. These fears disguise themselves well. They settle deep in the heart and influence how we respond to God, to people, and even to our purpose.
FOMO — Fear of Missing Out
FOMO speaks with urgency. It pushes you to do more, see more, and become more. It says things like:
“If I don’t attend, I’ll miss something important.”
“God is moving over there. What if I get left out?”
“That person is receiving the opportunities I prayed for. What am I doing wrong?”
At first, this fear might feel like motivation. But in truth, FOMO grows out of a poverty mindset. This fear believes there isn’t enough of God’s goodness to go around. It breeds spiritual anxiety. You may feel like you must hustle or seize every opportunity before someone else does.
However, the truth is simple: You lack nothing.
In God’s Kingdom, there is no shortage. You do not compete with others. Your place at the table is already set. God has given you a unique identity in Christ, and no one can take that away from you. You do not need to chase what God has already made yours.
FOBI — Fear of Being Invited
On the other hand, FOBI is quieter but just as harmful. It whispers things like:
“They only invited me because they had to.”
“If I say yes, I’ll end up exposed as a fraud.”
“I’m not spiritual enough, wise enough, or worthy to be here.”
While FOMO fears exclusion, FOBI fears inclusion. It fears being seen and judged. Many who battle FOBI also deal with imposter syndrome. Instead of walking through open doors, they step back and hide.
But God’s Kingdom does not operate that way. God does not simply allow you in. He welcomes you with joy. He delights in you. He knows you completely and still invites you closer.
Jesus said:
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit.” – John 15:16
God chose you. He sees you. He equips you. You do not sneak in through the back door. He calls you His own and places you right where you need to be.
The Crux of the Matter
So, what do these two fears have in common?
FOMO says, “You’re missing out.”
FOBI says, “You do not deserve what you’ve been given.”
But your identity in Christ says, “You are chosen, called, and complete.”
These fears try to steal your ability to rest in God’s timing. They make it harder to trust the call He placed on your life. FOMO creates a striving spirit. You chase after opportunities, afraid God will forget you. FOBI creates a shrinking spirit. You pull back, thinking God made a mistake in choosing you.
In both cases, fear wants to take the driver’s seat. But fear never leads you toward purpose. It only pulls you away from it.
The Antidote Is Identity
So, what breaks the grip of these fears? The answer is not a better schedule, a thicker skin, or more chances. The antidote is a stronger identity in Christ.
When you know who you are in Him, everything begins to shift. You stop chasing moments and start walking in His timing. You stop hiding when invited. You begin to show up with quiet confidence, knowing His presence goes with you.
Instead of viewing God’s invitations as tests, you begin to see them as signs of His trust and delight. God does not just love you. He likes you. He wants to work alongside you. You do not have anything to prove to Him. You no longer chase affirmation and recognition from leadership, friends, or peers through action or silence. You find rest in who you already are.
What Can You Do?
If you feel caught between FOMO and FOBI, there are a few steps you can take to begin walking in truth.
First, name the fear. Speak it out loud. Say, “I fear being left out,” or “I fear I am not worthy of this.” When you name the fear, you take some of its power away.
Next, replace the fear with truth. Say to yourself, “I lack nothing in Christ. I am not out of place. I am not late. I belong where God placed me. I am not too much. I am not not enough. I am His.”
Then, stand on Scripture. Let God’s Word speak louder than any lie. These verses are a good place to start. You might want to add more to your personal list as you explore the Bible further.
Romans 8:15 – You have received the Spirit of adoption.
Ephesians 2:10 – You are His workmanship, created for good works.
Colossians 2:10 – You are complete in Him.
Isaiah 43:1 – “I have called you by name. You are Mine.”
A Final Thought
In the end, fear is not a Kingdom virtue. God does not honour it. He does not excuse it.
We do not live by fear. We live by faith. And we do not live by the world’s labels, either. Extroverts and introverts alike are called to trust, not hide behind personality as an excuse. Your wiring may shape your comfort zone, but it should never shape your obedience.
So, if you find yourself caught between the fear of missing out and the fear of being invited, take heart. You are not missing out. You are not unworthy. You are not overlooked. You belong to Him. And that is more than enough.
