Freedom Costs—Love Still Chooses

Freedom for Whose Sake?

At the time of this writing, September 10, 2025, Christians across the United States hearts are heavy. Reports confirm Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University. Regardless of your political opinions, Charlie Kirk’s main heart was to bring the gospel, even when it came at great personal cost. This blog is not about American politics. I am Canadian, and I write with the reminder that the freedom we enjoy as believers should never be taken lightly, no matter where we live.

History shows us that the cost of speaking truth is not bound to one side of the spectrum. Decades ago, Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., a minister of the gospel, was also assassinated. He used his voice to advocate for justice and dignity for those with no voice. Both Kirk and King remind us that following Christ often leads into dangerous territory, where truth challenges both culture and comfort.

A Word on Freedom

Dann Farrelly puts it this way: “Christ died to set us free from sin, death, fear, and shame, in order to establish us in freedom so we can live and love as God’s gracious children. Freedom is deeply personal, but it is not self-centred. We are given freedom so we may present ourselves to the Lord as willing sacrifices, surrendered and ready to serve.”

This is the freedom Jesus demonstrated. Philippians 2 says He had every right to cling to His divine standing. He had the authority to step away from the cross. Yet He chose to humble Himself, to serve, and to give up His life. He saw you, He saw me, and He decided we were worth it.

Freedom That Chooses Love

We hear a lot about freedom today—freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from restraint. True freedom, though, is more than preference. Sometimes it means laying down our rights so others can encounter hope, dignity, and grace.

If your plans are interrupted today and you feel the sting of inconvenience, pause. Remember the One who surrendered everything for you. And remember those who counted the cost to stand for Christ. Freedom costs—but love still chooses.

While some media outlets avoid the word, many see this for what it is — an assassination.
